Several signs on the Rosetta stone are not found in the basic alphabet, and some of these were later hieroglyphs added by the Egyptians that represented two or three sounds together. Another of Champollion’s discoveries was that some of the signs were “determinatives.” That is, after a word was spelled out phonetically, there was sometimes a sign at the end of the word that helped clarify the meaning of the word. For example, in, the first three signs spell boat, and the last sign confirms that the word is a boat.
