The unfinished temple of Kalabsha is named after the village of Kalabsha. It is located 60 km south of the Aswan Dam. Although the temple goes back to the Roman era, some historians believe that it dates back to the 18th dynasty and was built by king Thotmosis III and Amenhotep II. The temple also is known as the temple of Mandulis, referring to the sun god of Lower Nubia. After building the dam, the temple was relocated to another site to protect it from the dangers of rising water. It is one of the largest freestanding temples of Nubia. The temple was built by the Roman emperor Augustus, and later it was used during the Coptic era as a church, there is an impressive relief of St George slaying the dragon. Many Coptic crosses are carved in the temple as well. Your guide will explain all the history of the temple with its different courts and reliefs. At the end of the tour, you will return to your hotel.
